History of Yoga

Yoga is an ancient practice from India combining physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation. Over centuries, it has evolved into a holistic discipline for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Yoga is an ancient spiritual, mental, and physical discipline that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. The word “Yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root “Yuj”, which means to unite or join — symbolizing the union of the body, mind, and spirit. The practice of yoga was initially documented in the Vedas, the oldest sacred texts of India, and later expanded in the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, which highlighted yoga as a means to attain self-realization and spiritual growth.

Yoga evolved through several major systems:

  1. Hatha Yoga: Focuses on physical postures (asanas) and breathing techniques (pranayama).
  2. Raja Yoga: Emphasizes meditation, discipline, and mind control.
  3. Karma Yoga: Centers on selfless action and duty.
  4. Bhakti Yoga: Dedicated to devotion and love for the divine.

Over centuries, yoga has transformed from a spiritual practice to a global wellness movement, blending physical exercise, mental relaxation, and holistic health techniques. Today, yoga is practiced worldwide for both wellbeing and personal growth.
